The violin works of Arcangelo Corelli were popular all over Europe in the early eighteenth century, and for the young Johann Sebastian Bach too, they were models to aspire to. Bach closely studied the solo and trio sonatas and adopted many of their stylistic features in his own chamber music. At around the same time, Jean-Marie Leclair was taking an interest in the Italian tradition, albeit combining it in his sonatas with hugely challenging performance techniques.
